If you’re ready to consider therapy, you’ll find a handful of common questions clients often ask me about therapy to see if this is the right time for counseling.

As a  therapist myself, I know that being with clients as they process their lives and trauma can definitely pull you in and activate your own issues. Getting triggered is a normal part of doing this work. You are only human and there are times when you need your own therapeutic zone to deal with your “stuff”. In my experience, going to therapy is often an essential part of a therapist’s journey to maintain a sense of well being. 

Therapy for therapists is a way to practice what you preach. It’s doing what you prescribe to your clients and caring for your own needs. As therapists, we hold space for others as they struggle with tremendous inner turmoil and trauma. Sometimes it is necessary to have your own therapeutic space to process your experiences where you get to be the client. In this way, you become more effective for your own clients.

Doing your own therapy helps to keep you in integrity with yourself so that when you get triggered you can separate your client’s experience from your own. Therapy for Therapists keeps you honest, ethical and on track to support your clients with a clean point of view, able to do your work effectively with your clients.

In many ways it’s not very different at all. Just like any client, I will support you in feeling your feelings, growing self awareness, and practicing coping skills. That said, therapy for therapists is often more advanced because the clinician in therapy has a greater sense of self-awareness and depth of insight into their issues. You may discuss your clients with me, but the main focus of your therapy will be your functioning as a human being. 

Somatic therapy is a very powerful tool that you can learn to use to become aware of your countertransference with your clients. Focusing on sensations in your body can help you bring shadow parts of yourself into your awareness. This dose of perspective is incredibly powerful for helping you understand at a deeper level what’s being triggered or impacted by the clients you’re seeing. Somatic Therapy can also help you with grounding and learning to feel safe in your body as well as loving and accepting yourself. 

Countertransference is the name we give to the reaction, emotions and feelings that are invoked inside of you as you work with clients. They can show up in your body, your mind or your heart. When we do this kind of therapy, I will help you learn how to observe and monitor the experiences you have while working with your clients.

By learning how to notice and observe your own innate reactions, you gain clues into yourself and the unconscious becomes conscious. It’s from that place that we can work with your reactions to help resolve challenges brought up from your interactions with your clients.

When your emotional container is full or you have a gaping hole inside of yourself, your clients get less from you. The work is passionless and your clients experience a lesser version of you which leads to less productive outcomes. 

As therapists we have to try our best to be as whole as we can be so we can be of the greatest service to our clients. When you engage in healthy self care activities such as therapy, you will not only feel better, but you will be a way better therapist. You’ll be less reactive. Your reactions will make sense and you’ll feel more in control of your professional experience. The reality is that therapists are human and as humans we need places for our own care and nurturing as well. By working on yourself in therapy, you will continue to grow in your therapist role.
